Welcome to the 2012 version of the Celebrate NJ! Middle School STEP, a writing and creative computing program for grades 6-8!
S: Science T: Technology E: Environment P: Program
New Jersey has many things to be proud of when it comes to science and technology. The first town wired for electric light was in Roselle Park, NJ. Thomas Edison and Albert Einstein did much of their great work here in New Jersey. The first canned and frozen foods, telephone, movie projector, bubble wrap, band-aids, teflon, antibiotics, submarine, and so much more…. were all invented right here in New Jersey. We’re also a leader in alternative energy, second only to California in the number of solar panel installations, and our environmental policies see are some of the best in the nation.
In this program, students in grades 6 – 8 research people, inventions, innovations and current issues, and write an essay (300-500 words) about what they learned.
Then, and this is the exciting part… they use technology, a program called “SCRATCH” developed by M.I.T. to teach others what they learned.
We will publish the best articles and post the best SCRATCH projects on our website at the end of this program.
